National Provider Identifier DEADLINE
The CMS (US Gov. Healthcare regulatory agency) passed regulations mandating that Payers and Providers solely use a new unique National Provider ID (NPI). Providers are required to obtain an NPI and must use them in standard transactions by the May 23, 2007 compliance date. The immediate potential problems facing the healthcare industry are two-fold. First organizations must convert all provider data from a proprietary ID to the new NPI which requires clean data devoid of multiple or “orphaned” data. Second administration information systems must be modified to use the new 10 digit NPI. Meeting this deadline will prove a challenge for the infrastructure of healthcare organizations.
